Moira Hazel

For Moira, being encouraged to move beyond the limits of realism has unlocked more creativity and enthusiasm, as well as the chance to explore new ideas and avoid staying within a safe comfort zone.

  • Moira always tries to paint what feels right to her, and she finds that her work seems to develop naturally. Being encouraged to move beyond the limits of realism has unlocked more creativity and enthusiasm, as well as the chance to explore new ideas and avoid staying within a safe comfort zone.

She was absorbed in her own world, with no music, no talk, no radio, just hundreds of decisions. She doesn't know at the start where a piece of art is going to end up. She is not worried about 'getting it wrong'. She finds that ignoring critics, competitions, and popular taste is emboldening.

For Moira, art is about being original and inspiring. Working within these confines energises and excites her, bringing her a great sense of happiness.

  • Born in South Wales, Moira Hazel lived in England, Germany and Cyprus before settling in Dorset. She has also spent a lot of time in Australia with her family and has been influenced by the Australian way of life and culture.

She is inspired by the artists Matisse, Derain, Hundertwasser, Klee, Klimt, and many more modern painters, especially those using bold colours, patterns and textures. Places visited, the light, colour, atmosphere, plant forms, landscape, rock patterns, the sea, fabrics, and children's art all add to the mix. She finds inspiration everywhere.
