Jonathan Smith
-
Jonathan Smith grew up in rural Aberdeenshire before moving to the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides at the age of sixteen.
He studied at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen (as did his parents) and what is now Brighton University. He has exhibited extensively at Art Fairs in the UK, Europe, and the US. His work has been shown by the RBA and RA and is held in private and public collections across the UK, Europe, the US, and the Far East.
After leading Art Departments in Sussex and Brighton institutions for a number of years, he is currently focussed on developing his own creative practice. He lives on a chalk ridge above the meandering river Ouse in the South Downs, painting in a building at the end of the garden.
Jonathan’s paintings hover between the representation of elemental forces and a more abstract state. His most recent pieces explore the complex relationships between structure, colour, surface and expression. Finding a satisfactory balance between these often conflicting elements results in rich, multi-layered oil paintings with a strong sense of themselves and of the locations which inspired them.
