Barbara Burns
-
Barbara Burns completed a BA Fine Art degree at Brighton University in 1996. Since then she has sold in the major London Art Fairs: Affordable Art Fair, Battersea and Hampstead, and London Art Fair. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across the UK.
This current body of work has been inspired by what lays beneath two landscapes that she walks and knows well: the chalk of the South Downs and the granite of the Lizard Peninsula.
The experience of exploring landscapes inspires her painting – the dramatic west coast of Ireland, Snowdonia, the Cornish and Jurassic Coasts. Closer to home, many walks taken on the South Downs continue to inspire and inform her work. The gathered memories promote an intuitive response in the studio. Working in oils with glazes allows her to build the paintings overs several months, selecting and eliminating forms and textures.
In Barbara’s paintings there is often a sense of the buried or concealed ancient landscape, bursting through in places to give rise to rusty oranges, reds and blacks – the ‘black butter’, as described by poet Seamus Heaney.
