Pierre Diamantopoulo tells us about his inspiration behind the sculpture:
"Flight of the Langoustine" was the first in the series of sculptures made on Brighton Beach after a bit of beach-combing. A storm had deposited a mangled lobster pot yards from my first studio under the arches. In my imagination, this washed-up object had been a means of escape for the lobsters, and this translated itself into a human story of exodus and release – a dash for freedom".
Four faceless human figures tilt and fall away - on and off objects that teeter on a chaotic or shifting stage. They occupy the air and appear to float or flee in improbable spatial compositions; their means of support are seemingly nebulous. It is an exercise in a perfect but disquieting and tense equilibrium.
Hove Plinth was unveiled in April 2018 as a new cultural landmark on the Hove seafront. The inaugural sculpture Constellation celebrates Hove's past and present and was created by Jonathan Wright. Constellation is making its new home at Hove Museum and has made way for Flight of the Langoustine.
Please read here for more information about the project and Pierre's processes.
If you haven't yet seen the magnificent sculpture, I would highly recommend a visit. It is situated at Kingsway on Hove Seafront.
