Fernando Guibert
-
Fernando Guibert was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina where he gained degrees in both Fine Art and Modern and Contemporary Art. After university he exhibited extensively and taught and lectured in Argentina before arriving in London in 1989 to exhibit his drawings. Following the success of his exhibiton, Guilbert decided to stay in London as an artist and lecturer in the History of Art, while developing his printing techniques such as etching, drypoint, aquatint and silkscreen. He also worked as a screen print designer in Camberwell, and as a set designer for theatrical productions, including an adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, with Teatro Arte Livre in Spain and London.
Guibert uses a variety of materials and techniques to create his works, including drawing, painting and various printing processes. He most likes to work in a series until he has fully interpreted what originally attracted him to the subject. He initally researches his subject to aquire the necessary information to allow him to work in an instinctive and spontaneous way, either on canvas or paper.
His imagination plays a vitial role in his art, as do dreams. Literary and childhood references together, with adult experiences, are all sources of inspiration. He will often take natural forms like animals or human figures and transform and disfigure them as a sort of playful game. The resulting unexpected imagery can create fantastiful and powerful images that are offen satirical by nature.
Guibert has had solo and joint exhibitions in Argentina, Brazil, Great Britain, Spain and Malaysia. His most recent solo exhibition in London was in 2011 entitled “Night” (Prints and works on paper) at the Instituto Cervantes. His work is also in many private collections worldwide, including the University of Paris Sorbonne INHA, the University of Essex Collection of Latin American Art (ESCALA) and the Warburg Institute. The University of London has a permanent a set of his prints on their walls. He is currently working on a series of drawings and prints to illustrate Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy due to be published in 2016.
